As an educator, she utilizes a Bachelor of Science in Psychology; an Associate of Arts in Fashion Design: and a terminal degree, Master of Fine Arts in Fashion with a concentration in Fashion Design along with over 35 years of teaching experience and a lifetime of living to enrich her art, inside and out of the classroom. Professor Sumpter currently teaches fashion courses as a full-time faculty member at Clark Atlanta University, one of the nation’s largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). As a designer, Sumpter’s forte included creating fashion apparel and accessories. Later, Professor Sumpter used experience gained while working as a patternmaker for moderate-high end women's apparel manufacturers to launch her freelance design business as a patternmaker, fashion designer and fashion instructor. This interdisciplinary study is an excellent vehicle for developing research skills. In recent years, textiles undergraduates have engaged in a collaborative project with the Biology Department at Morehouse College. They utilized the scientific method to study fabric degradation as affected by environmental conditions and soil composition. The study involved producing an eco-friendly garment made from a bio-culture material which would aid in combating environmental pollution caused by the processes utilized in the manufacturing of textiles during the production of apparel. The research was significant in that the fashion industry is considered the second most polluting industry worldwide. Fashion designers and scientists have collaborated by experimenting with the Kombucha tea “SCOBY” to produce a sustainable textile for manufacturing apparel.
